The Challenge Tennis Team

Challenge Tennis provides tennis coaching for players of all ages and abilities.

Formed in 2012 by founders James and Tom. In 2015 they joined Great Missenden and introduced their Adult and Junior programmes.  During the last few years, these programmes have continued to grow as the team continue to bring their high quality coaching to the club.

James and Tom have been joined by some great coaches along the way, including Ross who is the  Head Club Coach. Challenge Tennis now have 8 full time coaches and a host of junior assistants.

James Goodchild James Goodchild , Director of Tennis

James started coaching at 16 and has coached all levels of players from beginners to performance players. He specialises in coaching U12 performance players. James' role as a Director sees him playing an active role in every aspect of the Challenge-Tennis coaching programme.
Ross Hemsely


Ross Hemsley, Head Club Coach

Ross first started coaching in his family owned Tennis Academy in Durban, South Africa. Since then he has acquired a lot of experience spending time coaching and training at the RCS Academy in Atlanta, Georgia then moving back home coaching for the family business. In 2012 Ross left South Africa and has been fortunate enough to coach in London, UAE and Singapore where he has had the responsibility of helping set up tennis programmes as well as heading up Adult Tennis programmes.

Tom Edis

Tom Edis, Head Coach

Tom has been a coach since 2001. He is the Bucks Under 9s and Under 10s Head Coach. He’s been involved in performance tennis since 2005. Tom is responsible for all our junior tournaments and match-play information. He is also first point of contact for our “Challengers” Performance Programme.

Matt Branton

Matt Branton, Club Coach & Tournaments

Matt started coaching in early 2008 as an unqualified coach looking for something more. In 2008 he took Level 3 Club Coach Qualification. I approached every lesson with the attitude of "Fun comes first" Why play something if you don't enjoy it? Matt is a strong all-rounder coaching all sessions from Tots to Adult beginners. His passion and enthusiasm for the game shine through in his sessions.

Huw Phillips

Huw Phillips, Club Coach

Huw has extensive experience of coaching juniors and adults of all levels from Beginner to junior Academy standard. Huw is also a Professional Racket Stringer, and regularly strings at ATP and WTA events including Wimbledon. He regularly plays team tennis in the Buckinghamshire Shield Premier league and has also represented Buckinghamshire at Senior County level on several occasions at inter county cup competitions.

Sam Frost

Sam Frost, Club Coach

Sam started coaching at 16 and has worked with some of the countries top coaches and players. Sam previously worked for Mark Warner in Kos, Greece, where in his role as Tennis Manager meant that was able to use his belief of pushing the “fun button” on court to the max. He specialises in adult beginners and junior coaching, specifically mini tennis and you can usually hear him from about 6 courts away!

Steve Dunklin

Steve Dunklin, High Performance Coach

Steve brings an abundance of experience having worked at numerous IHPCs, HPCs and Performance Centres throughout the UK. He has developed players at every level of the game, from Mini-Tennis through to world-ranked junior players who have played in the Junior Grand Slams and many senior players. Steve has coached 9 British junior number 1s and numerous GB representatives. Steve came to us from Millfied School where he coached the boys’ teams to National and Independent Schools titles.

Paddy Waplington

Paddy Waplington, Lead Strength and Conditioning coach

Paddy is a Strength & Conditioning Coach with considerable experience of improving performance with elite and high performance athletes. Paddy has worked with some of the best youth tennis players in the UK and has in depth knowledge of physically preparing tennis players to compete at national and international level. Paddy will be responsible for overseeing the athletic development programme for both the Tour and Challenger Squads.

Sarah Yalden

Sarah Yalden, Office Manager

Sarah has a wealth of experience working with small and large businesses. Sarah brings knowledge from working with different companies from finacial institutes to PR agencies.She is responsible for all the day to day running of Challenge Tennis, looking after the coaches, supporting the management team and the GMLTC committee.

Callum Humphries Callum Humphreys, Apprentice Coach

Callum joined us in 2016 after finishing his GCSE's. He has been a keen tennis player since 2012 and is working through his LTA accreditation's with us. "Tennis is a passion of mine and I am excited to be learning how to be a great coach with Challenge Tennis."
